Private markets could be a valuable addition to UK pension scheme default funds, especially for members who are many years from retirement. This area, however, is not without its challenges. In this article, Paul Armitage, Head of DC at Muse, looks at what this means for charges and member communications.

What do trustees now need to consider with rising private market allocations in UK DC pension defaults?
Private markets in DC defaults may widen investment opportunities, but they are likely to increase costs. This requires clear communication that connects rising costs to purpose and a higher standard of oversight, where trustees should set out why each private-market allocation is being made and what role it is expected to play.
